Cain’s family line runs straight down into the depths of depravity, culminating in Lamech. Lamech was a proud polygamist who sang about murder and boasted to his wives that he would avenge himself seventy and sevenfold. That is a perfect picture of the city of man . If that were the only story Scripture told, we would be left with nothing but a cycle of rebellion, judgment, and more rebellion. The narrative doesn’t pick up where Cain left it. It goes all the way back to the beginning and re-anchors the human story in the original creation of God. Moses uses that specific word as a formal marker throughout the book of Genesis . These aren’t dusty notes for those curious about genealogy. They are the official records of the covenant line . They are God’s way of saying that He keeps His promises in real time, with real fathers and real sons, in the actual history of the world.
