When we get to the early chapters of Genesis , and the genealogies in particular, the modern person’s impulse is to ignore them as if they were a list of the credits after a movie. Or as if we are swiping past a boring YouTube video to look for a more interesting one. We are tempted to skip over the lists of ancient names, unpronounceable consonants, and incomprehensible lifespans so that we can find a practical, bite-sized application for our week. We want three ways to improve our life, not a phone book listing of dead patriarchs. The genealogy of Genesis 5 is no less God’s word than Psalm 23 . It is not filler material inserted to pad the word count of the Torah . It was given by God for your edification and for His glory.
