In order to understand the profound weight of these two short verses, we first need to look at the dark backdrop leading up to them. By God's common grace , his descendants advanced in technology and culture, becoming the first human civilization. But apart from God, they grew more and more depraved. They developed technology but it just made them better at sinning. By the fullness of the seventh generation, they were redefining injustice as justice. The passage began with the blessings of God's common grace lavished on people wanting nothing to do with Him and ended with Lamech's song in praise of murder. That is the trajectory of the city of man, every single time. Give it a fullness of seven generations, and it will be singing about its body count. So the reader of Genesis comes to the end of verse 24 with a knot in his stomach.
