Today we are looking at the first verses of Genesis chapter four. This account of Cain and Abel is not a morality lesson about getting along with your brother. It is not a story about two boys fighting over toys in the backyard. The Bible presents it as something far more foundational. It is the first battle in a war that stretches from the garden to the cross. It is the first clash between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. To understand what is happening here we need to remember what happened in the chapter before. Adam and Eve committed treason against God their Creator. The cherubim with the flaming sword now guard the entrance to the garden. Toil and sweat are now part of the man’s labor. Even though they deserved immediate judgment He showed them unmerited grace.
