The passage we are looking at today is immediately after the fall and the curse. The covenant of works has been broken by our first father Adam and death has entered the world through sin. By God’s grace, man is given faith, and God pours out grace on sinners. These two verses establish the pattern for the entire history of redemption. They show us what saving faith looks like when it first appears in a fallen world. They show us what God’s salvation has always been by grace. It is never a cooperative project between God and man. It is always a substitutionary covering provided entirely by God at the cost of blood. The Garden of Eden had been exchanged for a sentence of death, condemning the man to sweat and toil until he returns to the dust.
