Today, we are looking at one of the most solemn passages in all of Scripture. In the verses leading up to this, we saw the ultimate blame game: Adam blamed Eve, and worse, blamed the God who gave her to him. Eve then blamed the serpent, who had no one left to accuse. Now, all three stand before the Judge of all Creation. The words we are about to read are not mere predictions about how hard life will become; they establish the consequences of sin that will darken history from that moment forward. The Fall was an act of high treason against the ultimate King, and the just sentence is death. Yet, even in the shadow of this judgment, there is grace. This passage points forward to Jesus dying for our sins. In fact, this section is known as the protoevangelium , the first gospel.
