The first two chapters of Genesis set before us a world of unbroken fellowship. Man walked with God without shame, without fear, without any need to cover or conceal. Adam and Eve were naked, and they were not ashamed. Their relationship with God their creator was as natural as the air they breathed in that garden. And so we have the first, and most tragic, game of hide and seek in all of human history. This is not some ancient tale about two people long ago. This passage is the diagnostic manual for the human condition. Every son of Adam and every daughter of Eve has reenacted this scene in one way or another. We sin, and our first instinct is to hide. We stitch together flimsy coverings of excuses and self-justification, and we duck behind whatever trees of distraction and escapism we can find.
