The first chapter of Genesis gave us the big picture overview. That was the wide view, the zoomed out picture. But the Holy Spirit doesn’t leave us floating in the clouds. In chapter two He brings us down to the garden floor. He shows us the specific task, the specific place, and the specific test that will determine the course of all human history. This is not a second creation account that contradicts the first. This is the zoomed-in account of what became of God’s creation once man entered the picture. The Bible marks the shift with a standard heading. This toledoth tells us we are now moving from the broad work of Elohim , God as all powerful transcendent Creator, to the intimate dealings of God as Yahweh Elohim , the covenant Lord. The term used for God changes because the relationship changes.
