The world’s culture runs on a frantic engine of anxiety and acquisition. Men and women rise early and lie down late. They scroll and hustle and consume, all in the hope of getting a little ahead or at least of forgetting how far behind they feel. Even the supposed remedies for exhaustion have become forms of work. The secular man, pretending God is banished from his spaces, has no ultimate reason for working and therefore no true reason for resting. His labor becomes a curse without a goal, and his rest becomes an attempt at escapism to forget the curse. He pushes his boulder up the hill only to watch it roll down again, and he calls the interval between rolls his weekend. This is where the worship of created things leads. When the creation is treated as ultimate, it turns into a grind, a treadmill with no off switch.
