We live in an age that is allergic to the very concept of divine judgment. Our therapeutic culture wants a God who is a celestial affirmation machine, a deity who pats us on the head regardless of what we do, assuring us that we are all basically good. The modern secular mind, when it bothers to read the Old Testament prophets at all, treats them like dusty, irrelevant relics. The names are hard to pronounce, the judgments are severe, and the geography is obscure. We read of Moab, Ammon, Philistia, and in our text today, Ethiopia, and we are tempted to see it as little more than ancient political score-settling, dressed up in religious language. We live in a world that is desperate for joy and utterly clueless about where to find it. Our secular age is a frantic carnival of distraction, a noisy, flashing attempt to convince itself that the abyss is not staring back.
