Modern man, and particularly the modern Christian, behaves as though he were the first man to ever walk the earth. We are afflicted with a peculiar kind of chronological snobbery, assuming that our temptations are entirely unique, our challenges unprecedented, and our wisdom sufficient. We live in an age of frantic, sweaty evangelism. Churches spend millions on marketing, on fog machines, on sermon series designed to be palatable to the unchurched Harry and Harriet. The prevailing wisdom is that we must go out and, through a combination of cleverness, cultural savvy, and sheer effort, somehow convince a skeptical world to come in. We live in an age that is desperate to tear down walls, to erase distinctions, and to flatten every hierarchy. But it is doing so in a profoundly rebellious and chaotic way. Our culture wants to declare that there is no difference between male and female, between right and wrong, between the sacred and the profane.
