The book of Romans is the constitution of the Christian faith. It is the systematic, logical, and glorious unfolding of the gospel of God. In our day, a day of sentimentalism and therapeutic deism, the gospel has been reduced to a small, private affair. We come now to one of the most majestic and, for our egalitarian age, one of the most offensive sections of all Scripture. Romans 9, 10, and 11 form a distinct unit, a great theological mountain range that deals with the question of Israel. Every great symphony ends with a final, crashing chord that resolves all the tension and brings all the themes to a glorious conclusion. The book of Romans is a theological symphony of the highest order, and Paul does not end it with a quiet fade-out.
