The book of Revelation is perhaps the most abused and mishandled book in the entire canon of Scripture. For many modern evangelicals, it has become a kind of inspired Rorschach test, a collection of chaotic inkblots where they see helicopter gunships, the European Union, and the latest villain from the newspaper headlines. The book of Revelation is not a secret codebook for predicting the headlines. It is not a crystal ball for figuring out who the antichrist is or when the rapture will happen. Such approaches are a profound abuse of this glorious book. We come now to the very end of the line, the final paragraphs of the final book of the Holy Scriptures. The Bible does not conclude with a period, but with an invitation. Modern evangelicalism has, for the better part of a century, treated this book, and particularly its ending, like a bomb disposal manual for a future apocalypse.
