It is where God teaches us how to speak to Him, how to feel before Him, and how to live in His world. And like any good book, the first chapter sets the stage for everything that follows. There are certain sins that are respectable, or at least sins that can be dressed up in respectable clothes. It is the rot of the bones, as Proverbs tells us. To admit to envy is to admit that you are small-souled, petty, and consumed with a bitter resentment that someone else has what you believe you deserve. After one hundred and fifty psalms, after every conceivable human emotion has been brought before God, lament, confession, anger, confusion, joy, and thanksgiving, the entire book concludes with a final, thunderous, all-encompassing command. The book of Psalms is the prayer book of the saints, and it teaches us how to talk to God.
