We are beginning a study of the book of Philippians, which is, by any honest reckoning, one of the most joyful documents ever written. The Apostle Paul, a prisoner of the Roman Empire, is writing to a church that he loves dearly, a church that was a true partner to him in his ministry. It is a letter written from a jail cell, and yet it rings with the kind of gladness that circumstances cannot touch. It is a command, a charge, and a fundamental duty of the Christian life. And notice where the joy is to be located. We come now to the end of Paul's letter to the Philippians, a letter soaked in joy and affection. And like many of his letters, it ends with what might seem to us like a series of personal shout-outs and a standard sign-off.
