We live in an age that is deeply suspicious of historical claims, particularly when those claims have to do with God. The modern mind wants its religion to be a private, subjective affair, a matter of personal feeling and sentiment, untethered to the brutish world of facts, dates, and eyewitness testimony. He was not the first-century equivalent of a gentle, soft-spoken guidance counselor. We see this nowhere more clearly than in His confrontations with the religious establishment of His day. Our modern evangelical sensibilities are often shocked by these encounters. Modern Christians tend to treat the Ascension of Jesus as a sort of sad but necessary postscript. The resurrection was the great victory, Pentecost was the empowerment, but the Ascension feels like a departure. It is the moment the Master leaves, and the disciples are left to get on with it.
