We live in a tidy, sanitized, and sentimental age. We want forgiveness to be a gentle feeling, a quiet moment of self-acceptance, a therapeutic release. We want a gospel without gore, a cross without blood, and a salvation without sacrifice. And when we come to a passage like this one in Leviticus, the modern mind recoils. It seems primitive, messy, and frankly, a bit barbaric. Slaughtering a lamb, handling its blood, burning its fat, this all seems very distant and very strange. He is forcing us to confront the nature of reality. It is an offense that incurs a debt that can only be paid with a life. It is not God simply looking the other way. It is a legal declaration, purchased at the highest possible price. What we have here in Leviticus is the grammar of forgiveness.
