We moderns, particularly we evangelicals, have a bad habit of treating the Old Testament tabernacle instructions as though they were divine interior decorating tips for a bygone era. We read about the lampstands and tables of bread and think it all very quaint, very ceremonial, and very irrelevant. We treat it like a museum piece instead of what it is: a schematic of the cosmos. The tabernacle was not a building where God was kept. It was a model of the world, a microcosm of God's creation, with God dwelling rightly at the center of it. Every piece of furniture, every ritual, every statute was a declaration about the nature of reality. It was a liturgical catechism for a people who learned by doing. These instructions in Leviticus are not an interruption of the narrative; they are the very heart of it.
