We live in an age that is allergic to definitions and despises distinctions. Our culture wants a spirituality that is all honey and no salt. It wants a god who is endlessly sweet, affirming, and accommodating, a god who never makes demands, never defines righteousness, and certainly never judges. This is the god of sentimental therapeutic deism, and he is a fiction. He is an idol carved out of the sugary foam of our own emotional preferences. When we come to a book like Leviticus, we are brought up short. We are confronted with a God who is intensely particular about how He is to be approached. The modern mind, steeped in a radical egalitarianism, recoils at this. Isn't it all just a matter of sincere intention? God is not interested in our good intentions if they are offered in disobedience.
