Our grief is either suppressed into a stoic silence or it explodes into a chaotic, self-pitying tantrum. We have forgotten the biblical category of corporate, covenantal lamentation. We see ruin, decay, and judgment all around us, in our nation and in our churches, and we either pretend it is not happening or we shake our fists at the heavens. We live in an age that wants a soft God, a manageable God, a God who is more of a celestial butler than a sovereign King. Our therapeutic culture desires a deity who affirms, who coddles, who would never, ever cause discomfort. We come now to the end of this bleak and sorrowful book. We have walked through the smoking ruins of Jerusalem, we have heard the cries of the starving, and we have felt the weight of a nation's sin brought to its terrible and just conclusion.
