We come now to the very center of human history. And here, in the Praetorium in Jerusalem, this collision is distilled to its purest form. You have the King of the Universe, bloody and beaten, standing before a petty Roman governor. You have the Author of all authority being questioned by a man who holds his own authority by a thread. You have the Lord of life being sentenced to death by those who are spiritually dead. This is not merely a story of a political execution. This is a theological drama of the highest order. Every word spoken, every action taken, is saturated with cosmic significance. The world thinks it is putting Jesus on trial, but in reality, Jesus is putting the world on trial. Pilate thinks he is the judge, sitting on his judgment seat, but it is Pilate who is being judged.
