We live in an age that worships the spotlight. Our politics, our entertainment, our celebrity-preacher culture, it all runs on the fuel of constant visibility and escalating spectacle. The assumption is that if you are not front and center, if you are not making noise in the capital city, then you are losing. Influence, we are told, is a matter of proximity to power. And so, when we come to a passage like this, our modern sensibilities can be easily baffled. He does not rally His followers for a confrontation at the Temple. But this is no cowardly retreat; it is a strategic withdrawal. Jesus is not running from the Jews; He is running the perfect race set before Him by His Father. Every step, every word, every geographical move is freighted with divine purpose. The conflict in Jerusalem had reached a fever pitch.
