We live in an age that has domesticated God. Our modern god is a celestial butler, a divine therapist, a cosmic affirmation machine. He is certainly not the kind of God who would weaponize insects. We prefer our disasters to be natural, our famines to be meteorological, and our judgments to be anything other than judgment. The book of Joel opens with a scene of utter devastation. An army of locusts, described in terrifying, apocalyptic language, has stripped the land bare. The fields are ruined, the trees are skeletal, and the wine, the oil, and the grain, the very symbols of God's blessing, are gone. Our cultural elites, our talking heads, our academics, they are all peddlers of pessimism. They want you to believe that history is a meaningless lurch from one crisis to another, a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing.
