For this reason, many Christians who like their gospel ethereal and their doctrines abstract have often found themselves a bit uncomfortable with it. But this is only a problem if you have a shrunken, anemic view of the gospel. We live in an age that is drowning in information but starved for wisdom. But if you were to ask the average man what wisdom is, he would likely describe a kind of shrewd, self-promoting cleverness. He would describe the ability to climb the ladder, to win the argument, to build a platform, to get ahead. And like a good builder, James does not end with a flourish of rhetorical wallpaper, but with a final, load bearing beam. He concludes his intensely practical letter with an intensely practical charge. The modern evangelical church, particularly in America, is afflicted with a bad case of individualism.
