We live in an age that has tried to domesticate God. We have created a quiet, respectable, pietistic deity who would never dream of raising His voice. This is a god of our own making, a harmless idol, and he does not exist. Our secular overlords believe that the best way to govern the populace is to keep them in a perpetual state of low-grade, and sometimes high-grade, anxiety. Whether the crisis of the moment is a novel virus, the climate, or the latest manufactured outrage, the goal is the same: to make you fearful. We come now to the final verses of this majestic prophecy of Isaiah, and what we find here is a bucket of ice water thrown on the smoldering, pessimistic eschatology that has dominated so much of the evangelical world for the last century.
