We come now to the end of a long and significant life. The book of Genesis is a book of beginnings, but it is also a book of endings. It is a chronicle of generations, of births and deaths, of promises made and promises kept across the slow march of centuries. And in these closing verses of chapter 35, we witness the quiet, dignified end of the second patriarch, Isaac. It is a simple, almost understated, conclusion to a life that served as a crucial, load-bearing link in the chain of redemption. Our modern sensibilities are allergic to this kind of story. We want every ending to be a cinematic climax. But the Bible is a sober book, and it teaches us that faithfulness is often a long obedience in the same direction, not a series of explosive sprints.
