We come now to one of the most mysterious and potent encounters in all of Scripture. The Christian life is not a placid stroll through a well-manicured garden. He has spent his entire life striving, scheming, and wrestling. He wrestled his brother in the womb, he wrestled him for the birthright, and he wrestled his father-in-law Laban for his wives and his wages. Now, after twenty years in exile, he is on his way back to the promised land, but standing in his way is the ghost of his past, his brother Esau, coming to meet him with four hundred men. Jacob, the consummate strategist, has done everything he can think of. He has divided his family and flocks, he has sent waves of presents ahead to appease his brother, and he has prayed a most excellent and orthodox prayer.
