Long lists of names, what we call genealogies, often fall into this category. Genesis 10, the Table of Nations, is one such chapter. It can feel like reading a page out of an ancient phone book. But to treat it this way is to make a profound mistake. It is like looking at the blueprints for a cathedral and complaining that it's just a bunch of lines. This chapter is not a dry, dusty appendix to the story of the Flood. It is the foundational document for all subsequent history. It is God's inspired ethnography, the original map of the world, drawn by the One who owns it. We live in an age that is pathologically confused about nations, ethnicity, and history. On one hand, we have a globalist impulse that wants to erase all distinctions, melting every tribe and tongue into a bland, uniform, beige soup, ruled by a centralized, godless bureaucracy.
