We come now to the book of Ezra, which begins where 2 Chronicles leaves off. For seventy years, the people of God have been in exile. The promises of God seemed to have run into a ditch. Jerusalem was a heap of rubble, the Temple was a ruin, and the covenant people were scattered throughout a pagan empire. We live in an age that is allergic to authority, unless, of course, it is a kind of authority that has first been thoroughly neutered and domesticated. Our culture loves to speak of mandates and decrees, but only when they flow from the sterile offices of a secular bureaucracy. We live in an age that loves abstractions and detests particulars. We prefer our sins to be vague, our repentance to be private, and our grace to be cheap. Our modern sensibilities are offended by the long lists of names we find in Scripture.
