We live in an age that has made an idol out of niceness. Our modern evangelical sensibilities have been shaped far more by the therapeutic culture of self-esteem than by the stark and holy Word of God. We want a God who is manageable, a Jesus who is always meek and mild, and a church that is perpetually affirming. We want a faith without a sword, a kingdom without a King, and a righteousness without judgment. And so, when we come to a passage like this one in Exodus 32, our first instinct is to recoil. But make no mistake, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This passage is a bucket of ice water thrown on our lukewarm faith. It is a divine corrective to the treason of niceness. What happened at the base of Sinai was not a simple mistake or a minor lapse in judgment.
