We live in an age that is desperately trying to have a world without owners. Our entire secular project is an attempt to borrow everything from God, His world, His morality, His logic, while pretending the Owner is not around. They want to use the sun to light their rebellion and breathe the air to curse His name, all while insisting that they are autonomous, that no one is watching, and that no final accounting is due. When God gives His law to Israel, He is not just handing down a set of arbitrary rules for an ancient agrarian society. He is laying down the very grain of the universe. These laws about lost donkeys, goring oxen, and borrowed tools are not quaint and dusty relics. They are intensely practical, concrete applications of eternal principles of justice, responsibility, and love for neighbor.
