We live in an age that is deeply confused about property. On the one hand, our entire economy is built on the frantic acquisition of it. On the other hand, our political discourse is filled with envy, resentment, and a determined effort to pretend that what is yours is somehow also mine if I can muster enough votes to make it so. We have forgotten a fundamental principle of biblical justice: God cares about your stuff. He cares who owns it, He cares what happens to it, and He has laid down laws to govern it. He did not just hand down the Ten Commandments from the smoking mountain and leave them to figure out the details. The law He gave to Israel, what we call the case laws, gets right down into the nitty gritty of everyday life.
