The book of Deuteronomy is a book of covenant renewal. It is the second giving of the law, not because the first one was faulty, but because the first generation to receive it was. Now, on the plains of Moab, on the very cusp of the promised land, Moses preaches a series of sermons to their children. We live in an age that has declared war on all boundaries. Our generation is characterized by a frantic, almost religious, zeal to blur, dismantle, and erase every line that God and nature have drawn. At the root of this revolutionary fervor is a deep-seated hatred for the created order, which is simply another way of saying it is a hatred for the Creator Himself. The eulogy has been given, the death has been recorded, and the nation has mourned. But the story does not end with a funeral. The story of God's covenant faithfulness never ends with a funeral. God buries His workmen, but His work goes on.
