The book of Acts is not the second chapter of a new story. It is the second volume of the same story that began in the Gospel of Luke. The implication is potent and unavoidable: this second volume, the book of Acts, is about what Jesus continues to do and teach, now from His throne in heaven, through His body on earth, by the power of His Spirit. In the modern evangelical world, we have a peculiar allergy to common sense. We have managed to cultivate a piety that is often doctrinally zealous and practically foolish. They treat their personal preferences, their cultural habits, and their individual liberties as though they were the eleventh and twelfth commandments. We have followed Paul through stonings, shipwrecks, riots, and trials. He rents a house for two years, talks to people, and then... Where is the neat and tidy conclusion that wraps up Paul's personal story? This sense of dissatisfaction reveals far more about us than it does about the text.
