We come now to the last letter the Apostle Paul ever wrote. These are the final words of a soldier of the cross, written from a cold Roman prison, awaiting his execution. This is not a letter of abstract theology, though it is packed with it. We are frequently told that the great spiritual battle of our time is between the Church and the world, between the sacred and the secular. We picture the faithful remnant huddled inside the walls of the sanctuary while the pagan hordes of secularism, Marxism, and hedonism rage outside. We come now to the very last words of the apostle Paul that we have recorded in Scripture. He has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, he has kept the faith. They are not a cry of despair, not a bitter complaint, but a benediction.
