We live in an age of sloppy spiritual accounting. In the modern evangelical world, grace is often treated as a soft, sentimental thing, a sort of divine permission slip to be mediocre. Both are profoundly wrong, and both are profoundly dishonoring to God. The Apostle Peter, having just described the coming judgment on false teachers, now pivots to give us a detailed, close-up profile of these men. He provides a spiritual police sketch, and it is not a flattering one. We must pay careful attention, because the threat he addresses is not primarily from outside the church, but from within. Peter brings his second letter to a close, not with a gentle fade-out, but with a series of sharp, bracing commands. He has just finished describing the dissolution of the entire cosmos. Eschatology is not a parlor game for theologians with too much time on their hands.
