We live in an age that is desperately confused about identity. Men think they can be women, the powerful think they are victims, and our entire culture is engaged in a frantic, high-speed chase away from reality. Everyone is trying to define themselves, to create an identity out of the thin air of their own feelings and preferences. The Christian life is a narrow road, and the devil, who has no creativity whatsoever, has only ever had two strategies. His first is to get you off the road and into the ditch on one side, and his second is to get you off the road and into the ditch on the other. We see this in the letters of the apostle Paul, and we see it here as the apostle Peter brings his first epistle to a close. These final verses are not throwaway lines or sentimental afterthoughts. They are the covenantal bookends to a letter written to saints who are scattered, suffering, and struggling to make sense of their place in the world.
