We live in an age that despises its own history. We are a people with a profound case of cultural amnesia, and it is a self-inflicted wound. We want to believe that we are the first people to ever exist, that we have sprung fully formed from the head of Zeus, with no debts to the past and no obligations to the future. We live in an age that is pathologically obsessed with a counterfeit unity. It is a gray, drab, totalitarian unity, enforced from the top down by people who hate distinctions.
