The Open Door and the Victor's Crown Text: Revelation 3:7-13
Introduction: The Folly of Strength
We live in an age, and particularly in a church age, that is obsessed with the metrics of worldly success. We measure our effectiveness by nickels and noses, by the size of our buildings and the reach of our brand. We want influence, we want a seat at the table, and we believe the way to get there is through strength, through relevance, through strategic planning, and through impressive programming. We have come to believe that big problems require big churches, and that the key to opening the doors of opportunity is to build a bigger battering ram.
And into this pragmatic, success-driven, and fundamentally worldly mindset, the Lord Jesus Christ speaks a word that is entirely upside down. He speaks to a small, faithful, and likely unimpressive church in a city called Philadelphia, and He commends them not for their great strength, but for their little strength. And He tells them that precisely because of their weakness, a weakness that was coupled with dogged faithfulness, He has set before them an open door that no man, no demon, and no hostile culture can ever hope to shut.
This is a message that the modern evangelical church desperately needs to hear. We have been chasing the world's definition of strength for so long that we have forgotten that the kingdom of God advances on an entirely different economy. It is an economy of weakness, dependence, and reliance on the one who holds the keys. This letter is a profound encouragement to the faithful remnant, and a sharp rebuke to all who would trust in the arm of the flesh.
The Text
"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: This is what He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says: 'I know your deeds. Behold, I have given before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Behold, I am giving up those of the synagogue of Satan, those who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie. Behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and make them know that I have loved you. Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown. He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the sanctuary of My God, and he will never go out from it anymore. And I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'"

The Sovereign Doorkeeper (v. 7)
Jesus begins by identifying Himself with three glorious titles that establish His absolute authority.
"This is what He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says:" (Revelation 3:7)
First, He is holy. He is utterly set apart, the transcendent standard of all purity and righteousness. Second, He is true. He is the ultimate reality. He is not just one who tells the truth; He is the truth. All facts are His facts. All reality is His reality. These are not just comforting descriptions; they are declarations of His authority. Because He is holy and true, His judgments are perfect and His word is final.
Third, and central to this passage, He "has the key of David." This is a direct reference to Isaiah 22, where the Lord replaces the corrupt steward Shebna with the faithful Eliakim, giving him the key to the house of David. This key represented total administrative authority over the kingdom. Jesus is declaring that He is the true and final steward of God's kingdom. He runs the entire household. He has the authority to grant or deny access, to promote or to demote. This is not the key to heaven's gate in a sentimental sense; it is the key to the entire administration of the cosmos.
And because He holds this key, His decisions are irreversible. "He opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens." When Christ determines to open a door for gospel advance, for ministry, for kingdom opportunity, no power on earth or in hell can close it. No government, no hostile culture, no denominational committee, no financial crisis can thwart His purpose. Conversely, when He shuts a door, no amount of human striving, cleverness, or ambition can pry it open. Our first duty, then, is not to try and kick doors down, but to appeal to the one who holds the key.
The Paradox of Power (v. 8)
Christ then commends this church, and the reason for the open door He has given them is a beautiful paradox.
"'I know your deeds. Behold, I have given before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name.'" (Revelation 3:8)
First, notice the comfort in "I know your deeds." The Lord sees. In a world that overlooks the small and the weak, Christ sees the quiet faithfulness of His people. He has not forgotten them. And He has acted on their behalf, giving them an open door for effective ministry.
But the reason is what should arrest us. He opened the door not "in spite of" their little power, but "because" of it. The Greek is clear. Their weakness was the very condition that invited His powerful intervention. A church that knows it has little strength is a church that is postured for prayer, for dependence, for reliance on God alone. A church that thinks it is strong is a church that relies on its own programs and budgets, and God will let them. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. This church was humble. They were not a megachurch. They were not movers and shakers. They had "a little power." And that was their greatest asset.
This weakness was not a compromised weakness. It was a faithful weakness. It was characterized by two things: they "kept My word" and had "not denied My name." In a time of pressure, they clung to sound doctrine. They did not water down the truth to make it more palatable. And they did not blush to be publicly identified with the name of Jesus Christ, even when it was costly. This is the combination God honors: doctrinal fidelity and public courage, all flowing from a heart that knows it is weak and that Christ is strong.
The Vindication of the Faithful (v. 9)
This faithful church was not without opposition. But Christ promises a stunning public reversal.
"Behold, I am giving up those of the synagogue of Satan, those who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie. Behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and make them know that I have loved you." (Revelation 3:9)
The opposition came from those who claimed to be the people of God but were not. This is a covenantal dispute, not a racial one. These were ethnic Jews who had rejected their Messiah, and in doing so, had forfeited their claim to be the true people of God. By opposing Christ's church, their assembly, their synagogue, had become a tool of the adversary, a "synagogue of Satan."
The promise is one of complete vindication. Christ will cause these opponents to come and bow down before the church. This is not to receive worship, which would be idolatry. Rather, it is a forced public acknowledgment of a spiritual reality. They will be compelled to recognize that God's covenant love rests upon this small, faithful Christian church. It is a picture of the ultimate triumph of the gospel in history, where the truth of Christ's lordship and His love for His people will be made undeniable to all.
Preservation Through Trial (v. 10-11)
Christ then gives a promise of preservation, followed by a sharp exhortation.
"Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown." (Revelation 3:10-11)
Their faithfulness was not a flash in the pan; they kept the word of His perseverance. They endured. Because of this, Christ promises to keep them "from the hour of testing." Now, we must be careful here. This is not a promise to be teleported out of all trouble, as in the modern dispensational fantasy of a pre-tribulation rapture. The Greek word `ek` means to be kept safe through a trial, emerging out the other side. God kept Noah through the flood, not from it. He kept Daniel safe in the lion's den, not from it. He kept the three Hebrews safe in the furnace, not from it. This is a promise of divine protection and preservation in the midst of a worldwide trial that will come to test "those who dwell on the earth," a technical term in Revelation for the ungodly world system.
In light of this, the command is urgent. "I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have." The Lord's return is always imminent, and this should spur us to diligent faithfulness, not idle speculation. We are to grip tightly to the doctrinal truth and courageous confession we possess. Why? "So that no one will take your crown." This is not a warning about losing salvation, but about losing your reward. The crown is the victor's prize for finishing the race well. It can be forfeited through carelessness and compromise.
The Overcomer's Reward (v. 12-13)
"He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the sanctuary of My God, and he will never go out from it anymore. And I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Revelation 3:12-13)
The promises to the one who overcomes, who perseveres to the end, are staggering in their glory and permanence. First, he will be made a "pillar in the sanctuary of My God." In this life, the Philadelphians were small and insignificant. In the age to come, they will be made into permanent, load-bearing, glorious structures in the very presence of God. They will have a place of honor and stability, and "he will never go out from it anymore." This is the promise of ultimate, eternal security.
Second, Christ will write three names on the overcomer, signifying a threefold ownership and identity. He will receive "the name of My God," marking him as the eternal possession of the Father. He will receive "the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem," marking him as a full citizen of the triumphant and glorified kingdom. And he will receive Christ's "new name," signifying a new, deep, and personal relationship with the victorious King. All our identity struggles will be resolved in this glorious, triple-branding of grace.
The final charge is for everyone. This is not just a private letter to an ancient church. This is what the Spirit says to all the churches, in every age. We are all called to be Philadelphians. We are all called to a faithful weakness that depends entirely on the one who holds the key of David. Let us therefore hold fast to His word, confess His name without shame, and look to the open door He has set before us. For our King is coming, and His reward is with Him.
